Intelektiv (AmCham and Vernexo) & Brand Owners Association in Partnership with Croatian Customs - Intellectual Property Protection Events

One of the aims of the Intelektiv conference is also to educate the general public of Croatia on the problems of intellectual property protection. For this reason in co-organization with Brand Owners Association and with help of the Croatian Customs we organized two events where Croatian Customs officers presented various counterfeited goods they confiscated. The events took place in Avenue Mall on Friday (12 Feb) and City Center One (13 Feb) on Saturday during the busiest times of the day. They raised great interest from the shoppers and were great success.

Mr. Arn Willems, outgoing AmCham President, briefly presented the Chamber’s activities in 2009. In addition to the many regular events organized by the Chamber, including luncheons (which number although reduced was more than compensated with high-profile speakers that attracted record high attendance), various seminars, power breakfasts, conferences and continuing Road Show (Rijeka and Pula), AmCham also published several position papers: ‘Protection of Fair Market Competition in Croatia’, ‘AmCham Encourages and Supports Adoption of Legislation/Regulation Promoting Environmentally-friendly Technologies, including Hybrid Vehicles, Solar Energy, Public Transport…’, ‘Expediting Croatia’s EU Accession Critical to Economic Prosperity/Development of SouthEast Europe’, ‘It is Imperative for the State to Regularly Fulfill its Financial Obligations towards Small and Medium-sized Businesses in the ICT and Other Business Sectors, in Order to Maintain Companies' Sustainability’.

Mr. Willems reminded members that position papers are an excellent tool for having their voice heard on important business issues. He emphasized the great success of the Law on Foreigners Task Force in changing the unfavorable provisions of legislation regulating foreigners within Croatia. Also, AmCham has established two new committees: Trade and Investment Committee (with subcommittees: Transparency/Bureaucracy, Finance/Investment, Competitiveness/Cost) and IPR Committee. He also announced INTELEKTIV - the first Croatian business conference dedicated to the commercialization, management and protection of intellectual property organized by AmCham and IPR Committee, to be held on 25 February 2010. AmCham also remained active in their Corporate social responsibility activities – organizing another successful Night of a 1000 Dinners that collects funds for demining, as well as collecting donations at our traditional 4th July Picnic for PUŽ-Association for Children with Developmental Deficiencies, for the purchase of specially designed learning communicators for the development of verbal abilities. We also supported the charity concert for the Debra Association. The funds will be used as the initial capital for building an international rehabilitation camp for "Butterfly children"- children suffering from the Epidermolysis Bullosa, a genetic skin blistering condition.

Mr. Vucić, Executive Director, thanked the presiding Board Members, Executive Office staff, and all the members for their support and work during the past financially challenging year. He presented the financial report for the 2009 financial year and budget for 2010. He highlighted the record figures of increased new members (36 actual compared to 28 planned) and positive advertising income that enabled us to offset the high level of membership cancellations we had due to the economic downturn.

The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham), in partnership with the Embassy of Canada, Embassy of the United States of America and International Trust Fund (ITF) , is organizing the eighth humanitarian gala dinner for mine free Croatia called the “ Night of a Thousand Dinners”. It is scheduled to take place in November 2009.

On November 20, 2009, more than 250 guests gathered for the 8th Night of a Thousand Dinners charity gala dinner for mine clearance in Croatia.

Every ticket was a donation to the cause and AmCham will be receiving a substantial direct donation in the amount of 100.000,00 kn from Mr. Riccardo Mazzucchelli, who gallantly offered the substantial donation at the dinner.

From 2001- 2008 the impressive amount of over 663,642 USD (approx. 4, 000, 000.00 kn) has been collected for mine clearance. All of the funds collected during the dinner through ticket sales and direct donations will be enlarged by the Canadian and US humanitarian funds through the International Trust Fund (ITF) for Demining and Mine Victims Assistance.

This year's project is still ongoing – donations can be paid to our special bank account: 2330003-1100367301 (Societe Generale - Splitska banka d.d.)

Due to the support of our sposnors and donators, we are proud that each year we make a difference in people's lives. Areas where we choose to donate the funds are of great significance to the safety and prosperity of the people living there, but for whatever reason these particular locations are low on the national demining priority list. Although a large portion of mines and unexploded ordinance have been cleared, the work is not yet over with the latest national plan estimating that Croatian will be free of mines and explosives at the earliest by 2019.

Presently, we have helped clear the following areas in Croatia:
• 2002 – “Areas of the agricultural institute in the Osijek region”
Area size: 24.940 m2
• 2002 – “Areas of the agricultural institute in the Osijek region”
Area size: 22.100 m2
• 2003 – The city of Vukovar, agricultural areas”
Area size: 63.820 m2
• 2004 - “Wider area around river Korana” (National Park Plitvice)
Area size: 26.040 m2
2005 - “Agricultural areas, Zadar- Baštica county”
Area size: 26.000 m2
• 2006- “Area around elementary school in Tordinci”
Area size: 49.610 m²
• 2007. Pristeg, Ivandića stanovi (Zadar County) - in the vicinity of the houses
• 2008- agricultural area/in the vicinity of the village Slana, Sisačko-moslavačka county

The 2009 gathered many guests from the Croatian business community, the government, international organizations and the diplomatic corps. Among our guests were Mr. Luka Bebić - President of the Croatian Parliament, US Ambassador - James B. Foley and Mr. David Fairchild - the emissary of the Canadian Embassy, Minister Tomislav Ivić (Ministry of the Family, Veterans' Affairs and Intergenerational Solidarity), Mrs. Maja Vrtarić - the emissary of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Mrs. Jelena Pavičić Vukičević - Deputy Mayor of Zagreb and Mr. Mislav Blažić - President of the Board of PBZ Card.

Guests enjoyed a four-course dinner, accompanied by fine wines, and ended the evening dancing to the music of the Swingers band. Famous for their energetic performances, the Swingers band played some of the best evergreen hits of the 20th century. The dinner host was the actor Robert Jozinović (Nova TV series, "Najbolje godine").

AmCham Cocktail sponsored by the American College of Management & Technology

Topic:
On September 24, 2009, the Best in Customer Service Award (BICSA) was presented at the AmCham Autumn Cocktail, held at The Regent Esplanade in Zagreb. The AmCham supported event was organized by Vita Komunikacije d.o.o. and sponsored by the American College of Management & Technology (ACMT) in Dubrovnik.
‘Quality customer service leaves a lasting impression’ was the message delivered during the presentation of the BICSA. The message is of great importance especially in these tough economic times where the cost of customer dissatisfaction is huge! Research shows that 70% of unhappy customers will switch and take their business elsewhere, and the cost of hiring a new employee is up to 10 times greater than retaining current ones.
So what does it take to remain competitive and meet today’s challenging business environment? A strategic focus on the customer,” explains Nikolina Marusic, Co-founder and Director of Vita Komunikacije. “Companies that develop and maintain strong relationships with their internal and external customers will create customer value and customer satisfaction, which, in turn, will influence the company’s long-term profits.”
Established in 2008, the BICSA is an annual competition open to any organization with a head office or branch in Croatia, regardless of size or sector. The purpose of the award is to promote excellence, best practices, leadership and innovation. Organizations compete against one another and are evaluated against five Criteria: (1) Service Leadership; (2) Service Culture; (3) Service Positioning; (4) Service Relationship Marketing and; (5) Service Recovery.
To determine the winners, the BICSA program uses similar methodology as highly respected programs, such the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in the United States and the EFQM in Europe.
Award winners will be recognized at a special recognition dinner on March 4, 2010 at the Sheraton Hotel in Zagreb. In addition, winners will be profiled in a special national report in Poslovni Dnevnik, the program Media Partner and Co-organizer. The report will be published in February 2010.
All AmCham members are invited to take part in this innovative program. Be a proud supporter of Croatian excellence—become a sponsor or apply for recognition. Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 list.

Interesting info about the 2008 dinner:

•2008 dinner was the 7th one to be organized by AmCham; we are planning another one this year in November 2009
• The amount collected with the 2008 dinner itself is: 27.000,00 USD (approx. 143.370,00 kn)
This amount will be additionally be enlarged through ITF
• From 2001 -2008 through we so far donated 585.590,00 USD (cca. 3.143 370,00 kn); the listed amount is without the matched 2008 funds from ITF
• PBZ Card was the largest sponsor of the 2008 dinner. ‘’Platinum sponsor’’
•Information on the field: demining will ensure the safety of local population (around 200 people live there), safe access to arable land, orchards and pastures in order to revive farming and cattle breeding. The area also lies near a main road and around the cemetery and Church in the village of Slana. On their way to the fields, cemetery or Church, locals are daily passing by the heavy mine contaminated land. Since the minefield is close to the houses in one part, several families are at risk.
The village was heavily destroyed during the war as it was in the zone of heavy battles, where confrontation lines were moved several times.

INDEPENDENCE DAY PICNIC

Early Saturday afternoon looked bleak – we thought we should rename the event ‘ Pool party’, since the heavy (monsoon!) rain created a series of small new lake s at our Bundek Lake picnic site. Fortunately, once again we had a little help from above and the Sun appeared around 3 p.m. and by the time our guests started arriving, we were mostly dry and ready for fun and games. As always, our numerous sponsors provided delicious food and refreshing drinks, as well as entertainment for big and small. After the formal address by U.S. Ambassador Robert Bradtke and AmCham President Arn Willems, AmCham Executive director Damir Vucić dr e w lucky winners of our rich raffle. This year we also donated part of ticket proceeds to Udruga Puž – Association for
Children with Developmental Deficiencies . The charity proceeds will be used for the purchase of specially designed learning communicators for the development of verbal abilities. The day ended with our traditional fireworks and this year 's experience was especially enhanced with special 3D glasses!

As always, special thanks to all of our sponsors and the Executive Office staff, without whom this wonderful event would be impossible to organize.

Thank you

Topic:
ZAGREB, 20th May 2009 - In the year proclaimed the Year of Creativity and Innovation by the European Parliament, the Development and Creativity Network Association – MRAK – organized the Croatian Creativity and Innovation Day and gave out awards for creativity and innovation in the business and social sectors.

The Croatian Creativity and Innovation Day was opened by Mrs. Ivana Nikolić, the President of MRAK, who stressed the importance of having a creative approach and said:
“We live in a time which yearns for creativity. This moment, which became known as the crisis, not only economic, but also social and spiritual, is a situation which asks for change and change can be instigated only by creativity.”
The official program of this unique manifestation began with dynamic and conceptually intriguing presentations by various lecturers, such as prof. Slavko Krajcar, prof. Slavica Singer, prof. Velimir Srića, winners of FameLab and others who were very successful at bringing the audience closer to their “aha” moment. The audience especially enjoyed the lecture of Staša Puškarić, professor at the American College for Management and Technology (ACMT) in Dubrovnik, who devised a way to save our planet’s atmosphere by installing carbon monoxide to the bottom of the sea, without killing underwater life.

The program continued with an interactive round-table on creativity and innovation as a tool for new economic growth and was moderated by the highly acclaimed Radio 101 host Zrinka Vrabec. Participants of the round-table, such as prof. Mate Granić, Dean of the High College of Journalism and the President of the Croatian Society of Lobbyis; Mr. Ivica Mudrinić, President and the Chief Executive Officer of T-HT; Mrs. Avis Beneš, manager of the EU Info Centre and terribly charismatic prof. Davor Pavuna, professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale –EPFL in Switzerland, voiced out their visions how to trigger constructive creative energy, so as to confront the inert systems which prefer the conventional way of thinking, especially in this time of economic crisis.
The moment that all were anxiously waiting for was the award ceremony hosted by the young Croatian actor Filip Jurčić. When the most creative and innovative in the business and social sectors were pronounced, the winners and the nominees, as well as all the other guest and attendees, were invited to a banquet at the Movieplex Hall where all were able to enjoy the company of innovation enthusiasts and exchange their creative ideas.
The Croatian Creativity and Innovation Day was founded in the year 2008 with the aim to encourage people to use their creativity and manage their creative intelligence more intensively, both in their private lives and corporate worlds. Since creativity is the main generator of development, through competent and creative lectures and by the means of the Award for Creativity and Innovation, the Development and Creativity Network Association intended to encourage different patterns of thinking and trigger the use of creativity in everyday corporate, social and private sector activities.

City Theatre Komedija is mainly participating in the preparation of the program and we are sure that you are familiar with all the great plays they have produced, especially the greatest musicals: Grease, Chicago, AIDA, Full Monty, www.komedija.hr

The best of the best will become the part of the dinner program!

Croatia is among the most mine-affected coutries in the world ! Recognize it as the problem in your neighbourhood! Donate /sponsor this charity event !
Through the Adopt-A-Minefield organization all the money raised with donations and ticket sale is augmented by additional monies from the U.S.A. and Canadian charitable foundations and then returned to Croatia for landmine removal.

It has been 5 years since the start of this project and through the past years impressive amount of 360.642,00 USD (2.095,330 kn) has been collected for demining. Around 2000 people were our guests at the dinners and showed their support. The proceeds raised by the previous gala dinners helped clear areas around the Elementary school in Tordinci (Vukovarsko-Srijemska county), in the region of the river Korana (National Park Plitvice), agricultural areas in the region of the city Osijek, Vukovar, and also Zadar- Baštica County. These are all areas of great socio-economic meaning.

AmCham Thanksgiving Wild West PartyThis year’s AmCham Thanksgiving dinner had the tastes of Wild West. Organized in the new restaurant Fort Apache Steak House in Strmec (Sveta Nedjelja), it felt as though we walked into a 19th Cent. fort on the Texas-Mexican border. The guests enjoyed traditional American specialties, such as stuffed turkey, cranberry sauce & apple pie, as well as listened to good country music.
While the parents were relaxing in good company, the children were doing the rain dance, dressing as fearsome Buffalo Bill and beautiful Pocahontas, and creating Native American artifacts (organized by Bubamarac Playroom).

AmCham's 4th July Picnic

Topic:
Although the Saturday Morning on the July 01 seemed to promise another rainy day, the afternoon was filled with sunshine. There is no better combination that being in the nature, relaxing with your friends and family, eating great food & listening to quality music all day.

The kids were running around and jumping at the Bogadura Kids Zone, playing volleyball and basketball...while their parents had an opportunity to try out their courage by playing Flag Football with the Thunder Zagreb team.

Picnic Photos

Again this year, our biggest sponsor was Diner Club International (Gold Sponsor), and we thank them for being the AmCham picnic partners from the beginning. Also, Colliers International was our official picnic "Sponsor".

Hotel ARCOTEL Allegra Zagreb welcomed the guests with delicious, fruit plates and Joe’s Bar fresh cocktails, and of course the famous "Hit the nail" game. Gavrilović once again had a fabulous barbeque and also the line of people wanting more. Karlovačka Pivovara provided the beer and the staff that seemed to get the attention of the male population :)

Four Roses prepared great cocktails and the American traditional game "Horseshoe throwing". Guests also enjoyed Coca-Cola drinks, McDonald’s pies & juice, and YOPPI Zagreb coffee with Italian flair. Our special "4th July" cake was prepared by Hotel Dubrovnik Zagreb.

Along with the AmCham executive director Mr. Damir Vucić and the AmCham president Mr. Josip Krznarić, the U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr. Greg Delawie also shared his thoughts on the 230th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Famous Croatian musician Mrs. Zdenka Kovačiček, sang the U.S. national anthem.

The perfect day was accompanied with great music & dance by Garcia Band (sponsored by Emerson Network Power), and the spectacular Wrigley fireworks ended the celebration.

Six Sigma Champion TrainingSpeaker: Mark Lansley, Managing Director, BMG Europe and Master Black Belt

Course Length: three consecutive days - September 20 – 22, 2005

The Champion training is targeted for managers looking for an in-depth introduction to Six Sigma. The program gives business leaders the skills they need to drive financial results. This intensive three-day course starts with an overview of Six Sigma and the DMAIC methodology. From there, class participants spend a significant amount of time talking about Six Sigma projects – and specifically how to recognize, prioritize, scope and define them. Special attention is paid to understanding what is, and more importantly, what is not, a Six Sigma project.

In the classroom, participants are provided with a series of templates and guidelines to aid in meeting their objectives. Additionally, a simulation exercise is used to demonstrate DMAIC tools. Finally, participants learn what steps are necessary to build a Six Sigma infrastructure. This includes techniques used to engage support functions such as Finance, Human Resources, and Information Technology to build the necessary governance for Six Sigma.

Topic:
Corporate Governance - Standards of Best Practice

The goal of the round-table is to present different aspects of corporate governance to an audience of non-expert, but interested businesspeople. It is also intended to familiarize the audience with the current status of corporate governance in Croatia and the European Union and with developments in these regions. Particular emphasis will be placed on the role of institutional investors.

The round table will focus on the following issues:
• The National Code on Corporate Governance and the annual compliance statement;
• Shareholder activism – the role of pension funds and their impact on the securities markets;
• Experience from practice – the role of the corporate secretary, board committees, compensation issues, audit;
• Financial and other surveys on corporate governance (local and international).
Our aim is to stimulate a focused and informative discussion. To do so, we are inviting three categories of participants: panelists, commentators and guests. Panelists and commentators are attendees with standing and knowledge who will contribute their professional expertise and experience to the discussion.
The event is open to all members of the American Chamber of Commerce and other interested parties as guests. Guests will be encouraged to ask questions and participate in the discussions commentators and panelists initiate.
