Most NL’s Round table “Tax system and demographic policy”

AmCham’s Executive Director, Andrea Doko Jelušić participated in the round table on the topic of proposals for tax reform.

Most nezavisnih lista organized on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 a round table titled “Tax system and demographic policy”. In his welcome address Mr. Božo Petrov, president of Most NL stressed out that that tax reform should give strong support to demographic revitalization, entrepreneurship and education and research.

Alongside Ms. Doko Jelušić, Mr. Davor Huić from Taxpayers' association – Lipa and Ms. Petra Mandic Member of the Rijeka City Council (Most NL) participated in the round table. The moderator of the round table was Mr. Mislav Kraljević, Most NL’s Council for Economy, Finance and Entrepreneurship.

Ms. Mandić highlighted that the Most NL is in favor of a uniform child allowance at the state level, which would equalize support for parents across Croatia, similar to the German model.

Mr. Huić believes that there is room for further tax unbourdening, but that the expenditure side of public spending should also be taken into account. A higher living-standard is required for demographic renewal in Croatia.

Ms. Doko Jelušić shared the key recommendations in AmCham’s position paper on tax unburdening, in particular, increasing the non-taxable personal allowance to HRK 4,800, reducing the 24% income tax rate to 12% and reducing the 36% rate, or alternatively applying a 36% rate for gross monthly salaries higher than HRK 75,000.

Roundtable participants agreed that further tax unburdening is needed to make the Croatian economy more competitive and to stop negative demographic trends.
