Priorities and Future Development of the Croatian Energy Sector

Mr. Jukić presented AmCham members with Croatia’s strategic energy policy framework and the Ministry’s key activities and priorities related to the energy transition, security of supply, and the further development of the energy sector.

He particularly addressed investments in the modernization, reinforcement, and digitalization of the electricity system, the development of energy storage systems, the expansion of the LNG terminal on the island of Krk, and the decarbonization of district heating. He also presented upcoming legislative initiatives concerning renewable energy sources, energy georesources, and the development of markets for renewable gas, natural gas, and hydrogen.

In the section dedicated to nuclear energy, Mr. Jukić presented the new legislative framework and the next steps in preparing the Nuclear Energy Development Program. Other priorities included energy communities, energy production for self-consumption, geothermal energy, carbon capture and storage technologies, the development of a hydrogen-based economy, and synthetic fuels.

The presentation was followed by a discussion with AmCham members on the regulatory and investment environment, as well as the key challenges and opportunities in developing a competitive, secure, and sustainable energy sector in Croatia.
