Boranka

At the Astronomical observatory on Mosor mountain near Split, the Scout Association of Croatia has presented the largest voluntary action of reforestation of burned areas in Dalmatia region, symbolically named Boranka (in Croatian, „bor“ means pine tree).

Nature, which has been devastated by recent catastrophic wildfires, cannot defend itself alone, nor can it regenerate quickly enough - therefore, it needs our help to bring back life colored in green onto black burned wastelands. And that is how Boranka was created – the only coloring book that brings back life from ashes.

Thousands of volunteers are going to be involved in tree-planting activities in areas surrounding Split. Together with Scouts from all of Croatia, many other NGOs, institutions, war veterans, students, mountaineers, firefighters, sports clubs and other volunteers will participate in planting activities.

Educational campaign, aimed at raising awareness among youth about fire protection and importance of forests and nature, will be held in schools, starting with the beginning of the new school year in September, while the tree-planting activities are planned for fall of 2018.

A strong media campaign, also starting in September, will enable all other citizens and companies to participate in the campaign – through donations or personally by planting trees.

Main organizers of the Boranka campaign are the Scout Association of Croatia, the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service and Croatian Forests Ltd.

The main partners of the Scouts for this project are the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham), the Canadian Embassy, the National Rescue and Protection Directorate and the Association of Croatian War Veterans, who will contribute with volunteers and logistics or help in educational activities.

The Boranka campaign is supported by the City of Split and the Split-Dalmatia County.

It has been given the High patronage by the European Parliament and the President of the European Parliament, Mr. Antonio Tajani.

Also, the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Science and Education, the Ministry of Demographics, Family, Youth and Social Politics and the European Parliament Information Office in Croatia are the formal patrons of the project.
