International Medical Corps Croatia Supports Ebola Response in Central Africa

With support from the U.S. Department of State and other donors, the organization works closely with ministries of health and local partners to contain the outbreak.

As of June 10, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reported 635 confirmed cases and 127 deaths. The outbreak is centered in Ituri province, with additional cases in North and South Kivu. Uganda has recorded 19 cases and two deaths, all linked to cross-border transmission from the DRC. Although no cases have been confirmed in South Sudan, the country remains at high risk due to limited preparedness.

Response efforts are challenged by insecurity, particularly in eastern DRC, where attacks on health facilities disrupt surveillance and increase the risk of undetected transmission.

International Medical Corps is active in 51 health facilities across the region, implementing a hub-and-spoke model to deliver case management, strengthen infection prevention and control, conduct screening and triage, support community engagement, and train healthcare workers.

To date, nearly 8,300 screenings have been conducted, almost 60 patients treated, and 255 health workers trained. Outreach activities have reached approximately 27,400 community members with information on Ebola symptoms and prevention.

In Uganda, teams are supporting response and preparedness in high-risk areas. In South Sudan, where International Medical Corps is currently the only partner with Ebola case management capacity, efforts focus on training health workers, upgrading facilities, supplying essential equipment, and strengthening patient transport systems.
