Postal sector reduces harmful emissions by 31 million tons of CO2
Croatian Post, together with 21 other postal operators, is celebrating the seventh Green Postal Day on Thursday, September 18th. As key players in the transport and logistics sector, postal operators around the world began working together in 2008 with the launch of a project called the Environmental Measurement and Monitoring System (EMMS).
Since the start of the collaboration, postal operators have reduced their emissions by 40%, or more than 31 million tonnes of CO2, and have committed to achieving a further reduction of up to 50% by 2030. The reduction in emissions is equivalent to the savings that would be achieved by using 31 million solar panels per year or removing approximately 6.7 million cars from the road for one year.
Last year, Croatian Post reduced total greenhouse gas emissions by 11,600 tons, i.e. by 18% compared to 2023, and continued the positive trend in most emission categories due to electrification of the fleet, more energy-efficient facilities and optimization of logistics processes.
Using electric vehicles, bicycles and deliveries in pedestrian areas, postmen and women covered 14.5 million "green" kilometers last year, which is almost 30% of the total 53.1 million kilometers traveled. This is an increase of 9.3 million kilometers compared to 2023. In achieving a continuous reduction in CO2 emissions at Croatian Post, approximately 400 electric delivery vehicles, i.e. the largest green vehicle fleet in Croatia, play a key role.
Green Postal Day is a global campaign launched by postal operators participating in the Sustainability Measurement and Management System (SMMS) – a program of the International Postal Corporation (IPC) that aims to highlight sustainability and green business practices. 26 postal operators from around the world participate in the SMMS program.
